Food Porn: Laab Dib

Laab Dib on Sukhumvit 101/1

One for the more adventurous foodie, this spicy northeastern salad is made with same herb and spice mix as namtok. That means it’s heavy on both chilli and mint, and has a fresh and zingy flavour to perfectly complement the fattiness of the meat. But the dib on the end of this dish’s name gives it a twist – it’s made with raw meat, in this case beef. That should explain the intense red tinge the whole dish takes on, still oozing blood as it is prepared. Think of it as the steak tartare of Thai cuisine – and try it if you dare. I had this plate at a nighttime somtum stall on Sukhumvit Soi 101/1 in Bangkok, a short walk from Udomsuk and Punnawithi BTS stations.
